Signs + Signifiers
Some more ideas about "Trace" (here). A necessary & irreducible component of absence. A sign is not just the arbitrary relationship. There is always another component of uncertainty, woven into the texture of every sign (any word, bodily gestures, relic, totem, marker of identity, etc). There are only traces, and most of them become hidden. A trace is a "lure," according to Derrida (reminiscent of Sartre's notion of "bursting toward"). In supplementing the theory of signs, within semiotics, Derrida substitutes it.
