The Adventures of Prince Achmed, 1926

Imagine a massive mezzanine lit by a large octagon-shaped skylight. And imagine that you have been commissioned to create an artwork to fill that space. What would you do? What materials would you use? For Gabriel Dawe, the artist behind Plexus no.29 at the BYU Museum of Art, he chose to use nearly 80 miles of colored filament to activate the luminous space. The colored filaments seem to mimic the effects of a giant prism, spraying a spectrum of color through the room and filling the volume of space with vibrancy, electricity, and life. The otherwise static room seems to shake and quiver and move beneath the installation. It captures the viewer and lifts them off the ground. The dancing, delicate filaments carry a unique intensity, capable of carrying the spectators into an odd, unexpcted meditation of otherworldly wonder.
